Many of the current applications and the predicted benefits of plastic follow those outlined by Yarsley and Couzens in the 1940s. There is some urgency, as the quantity of plastics produced in the first 10 years of the current century is likely to approach the quantity produced in the entire century that preceded. Such measures will be most effective through the combined actions of the public, industry, scientists and policymakers. There are solutions, including material reduction, design for end-of-life recyclability, increased recycling capacity, development of bio-based feedstocks, strategies to reduce littering, the application of green chemistry life-cycle analyses and revised risk assessment approaches. Given our declining reserves of fossil fuels, and finite capacity for disposal of waste to landfill, this linear use of hydrocarbons, via packaging and other short-lived applications of plastic, is simply not sustainable. Yet over a third of current production is used to make items of packaging, which are then rapidly discarded. Around 4 per cent of world oil production is used as a feedstock to make plastics and a similar amount is used as energy in the process. However, perhaps the most important overriding concern, which is implicit throughout this volume, is that our current usage is not sustainable. However, concerns about usage and disposal are diverse and include accumulation of waste in landfills and in natural habitats, physical problems for wildlife resulting from ingestion or entanglement in plastic, the leaching of chemicals from plastic products and the potential for plastics to transfer chemicals to wildlife and humans. It is evident that plastics bring many societal benefits and offer future technological and medical advances. In this concluding paper to the Theme Issue on Plastics, the Environment and Human Health, we synthesize current understanding of the benefits and concerns surrounding the use of plastics and look to future priorities, challenges and opportunities. We can take drawings and convert them into something with more of a physical presence with our Formlabs 2 Steriolithographic 3D printer, and CanCam 4 axis CNC machine.Plastics have transformed everyday life usage is increasing and annual production is likely to exceed 300 million tonnes by 2010. But the promise is worth pursuing, Chiang says, because the amount of energy that can be stored in experimental versions of such cells, is already nearly double that of conventional lithium-ion batteries. So far, the current densities that have been achieved in experimental solid-state batteries have been far short of what would be needed for a practical commercial rechargeable battery. It’s been known that dendrites form more rapidly when the current flow is higher - which is generally desirable in order to allow rapid charging. Solid state batteries only make sense with metal electrodes, he says, but attempts to develop such batteries have been hampered by the growth of dendrites, which eventually bridge the gap between the two electrode plates and short out the circuit, weakening or inactivating that cell in a battery. But, he says, “the only way you can reach the energy densities that are interesting is if you use a metal electrode.” And while it’s possible to couple that metal electrode with a liquid electrolyte and still get good energy density, that does not provide the same safety advantage as a solid electrolyte does, he says. Solid-state batteries, Chiang explains, have been a long-sought technology for two reasons: safety and energy density. The findings are described in the journal Nature Energy, in a paper by MIT graduate student Richard Park, professors Yet-Ming Chiang and Craig Carter, and seven others at MIT, Texas A&M University, Brown University, and Carnegie Mellon University. Now, researchers at MIT and elsewhere have found a way to prevent such dendrite formation, potentially unleashing the potential of this new type of high-powered battery. While quartz typically forms prismatic (elongate, prism-like) crystals, in tiger's eye the original fibrous habit of crocidolite is preserved. As researchers push the boundaries of battery design, seeking to pack ever greater amounts of power and energy into a given amount of space or weight, one of the more promising technologies being studied is lithium-ion batteries that use a solid electrolyte material between the two electrodes, rather than the typical liquid.īut such batteries have been plagued by a tendency for branch-like projections of metal called dendrites to form on one of the electrodes, eventually bridging the electrolyte and shorting out the battery cell. A classic example is tiger's eye quartz, crocidolite asbestos replaced by silica. Some minerals may replace other existing minerals while preserving the original's habit, i.e. Sapphire and ruby are both varieties of the same mineral: corundum. Ordinarily, the latter habit is seen only in ruby. Some habits of a mineral are unique to its variety and locality: For example, while most sapphires form elongate barrel-shaped crystals, those found in Montana form stout tabular crystals. Minerals belonging to the same crystal system do not necessarily exhibit the same habit. Synonymous terms: allotriomorphic, xenomorphic.Īltering factors Goethite replacing pyrite cubes.įactors influencing habit include: a combination of two or more crystal forms trace impurities present during growth crystal twinning and growth conditions (i.e., heat, pressure, space) and specific growth tendencies such as growth striations. Anhedral: a crystal that lacks any of its characteristic faces, completely malformed.Synonymous terms: hypidiomorphic, hypautomorphic Subhedral: a crystal partially bounded by its characteristic faces and partially by irregular surfaces.Synonymous terms: idiomorphic, automorphic Euhedral: a crystal that is completely bounded by its characteristic faces, well-formed.Hence, it is also important to describe the quality of the shape of a mineral specimen: Most natural crystals, however, do not display ideal habits and are commonly malformed. Recognizing the habit can aid in mineral identification and description, as the crystal habit is an external representation of the internal ordered atomic arrangement. The habit of a crystal is dependent on its crystallographic form and growth conditions, which generally creates irregularities due to limited space in the crystallizing medium (commonly in rocks). In mineralogy, crystal habit is the characteristic external shape of an individual crystal or aggregate of crystals. The Bahamians apparently set up camps in the Keys that were occupied for months at a time, and there were rumors of permanent settlements in the Keys by 1806 or 1807, but the locations are not known. During both the British and Spanish periods no nation exercised de facto control. In 1766 the British governor of East Florida recommended that a post be set up on Key West to improve control of the area, but nothing came of it. Smugglers and privateers also used the Keys for concealment. Cubans and Bahamians regularly visited the Keys, the Cubans primarily to fish, while the Bahamians fished, caught turtles, cut hardwood timber, and salvaged wrecks. īetween 1763, when Great Britain took control of Florida from Spain, and 1821, when the United States took possession of Florida from Spain, there were few or no permanent inhabitants anywhere in the Florida Keys. This island was the westernmost Key with a reliable supply of water. It is said that the island was littered with the remains (bones) of prior native inhabitants, who used the isle as a communal graveyard. It literally means "bone cay", cay referring to a low island or reef. Ĭayo Hueso ( Spanish pronunciation: ) is the original Spanish name for the island of Key West. The last Native American residents of Key West were Calusa refugees who were taken to Cuba when Florida was transferred from Spain to Great Britain in 1763. Key West ( Spanish: Cayo Hueso) is an island in the Straits of Florida, within the U.S. But for most people in a city or suburban setting, it’s likely not an ideal fit: The stroller’s unusually large chassis and wheels are unwieldy and heavy, its handlebar has a rough texture, and its child harness is time-consuming and unintuitive to adjust. A Wirecutter staffer who has been using it praises its large storage basket and ample canopy. We didn’t notice huge variations from this calibration, but even so, this stroller was able to plow over tree roots and jump curbs better than any other model we tested. The Switch&Roll stroller that we tested has an adjustable suspension system that you can calibrate for the terrain and for the weight of the child. The same toddler seat can also work on the “&Jog” jogging stroller frame or-with the use of adapters-transform into a bicycle seat, a camping chair, or a restaurant booster. For example, there’s a toddler seat, sold individually, that you can click into a four-wheeled stroller frame called “&Roll,” which we tested. You can buy the components for it separately or in a bundle. If you’re interested in a rugged stroller with outdoorsy, à la carte add-ons: The Veer Switchback stroller system-from the makers of the popular Veer Cruiser, the upgrade pick in our guide to the best folding wagons-is unique. Still, considering the price and weight differences-and the fact that it can be hard to predict when (or if) you’ll need a convertible stroller and what type you may want-we’ve concluded that the Cruz V2 is a better choice for most people looking for a full-size stroller for one child. And unlike the Cruz V2, the Vista V2 comes with an infant bassinet attachment. Another key difference is that the Vista V2 can convert from a single stroller to a double stroller with the purchase of an additional seat we named the earlier-generation Vista model the upgrade pick in our guide to the best double strollers. Neither the Cruz V2 nor the Vista V2 is ideal for folding and carrying, and the Vista V2’s additional heft-it weighs 28 pounds versus the Cruz V2’s 25 pounds-makes it that much more cumbersome to lift. As for the handling, we thought the Vista V2 maneuvered slightly better than the Cruz V2, since its larger frame distributed weight differently across the stroller, but we also found it harder to navigate tight spaces with a stroller that had a bigger footprint. The Vista V2’s frame is bigger than that of the Cruz V2 (it’s 3.5 inches wider and 2 inches longer), and it expands on an already generous storage basket by another 3 inches in width. If you like the Uppababy Cruz V2 but want a larger stroller with even more storage space (and the ability to convert it to carry two kids): The Uppababy Vista V2 is basically a supersized version of the Uppababy Cruz V2, our four-wheeled pick for daily urban use. Finally, this stroller is compatible only with Nuna’s own line of car seats, which we have tested and do not recommend. Also, the bumper bar is a nuisance to click in and out and requires two hands to operate, and the adjustable footrest is a tad flimsy and short for older babies and toddlers. (“It’s more springy than sturdy,” says the editor.) We noticed suspension issues during testing, as well: With 36 pounds of weight in the seat, cornering became tricky, and big bumps stopped the Nuna Mixx and threatened to tip it over completely. But it has a number of flaws: A Wirecutter editor who has been using the Mixx Next for several months notes that the seat seems shallow for her toddler, and that her daughter bounces around in it as if suspended in air. This pricey stroller is super-attractive, great for pushing one-handed, and designed with a compact frame, making it good for both navigating and storing in tight spaces. If you’re looking for a high-end four-wheeled stroller with an especially easy fold: The Nuna Mixx Next has the easiest fold of any four-wheeler we tested (it basically bows to you). I’m not 100% sure this is the best way to achieve this, but it appears to work on the front end and doesn’t throw and php errors on the back end. My husband and I savored every flavorful crisp and crunchy bite. This is definitely not my mother’s Chop Suey! Lol. Fresh and unique items are readily available now, so I don’t have to cook like she did. My mom made Chop Suey with all those canned, soggy La Choy ingredients, but still we loved it at the time. I’ve been trying to do retro recipes from my childhood. Bring sauce to a boil, undisturbed, then stir to combine with pork and vegetables. Make a well in center, then stir broth mixture and add to well. Drizzle 1 tablespoon vegetable oil around side of wok, then stir-fry pork until just cooked through, about 2 minutes. Reheat wok over high heat until a bead of water evaporates immediately. Stir together chicken broth, 1 teaspoon oyster sauce, and 1 teaspoon cornstarch. Transfer each vegetable as cooked to bowl with celery. When stir-frying bok choy, begin with ribs, then add leaves and 1 tablespoon water after 1 minute. Reheat wok and stir-fry each remaining vegetable separately in same manner (but allow only 1 minute for bean sprouts), adding 1 teaspoon oil to wok before each batch and seasoning with salt. Drizzle 1 teaspoon vegetable oil around side of wok, then stir-fry celery, seasoning with salt, until crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Heat a wok over high heat until a bead of water dropped onto cooking surface evaporates immediately. Serve sprinkled with a little sesame oil and coriander.Stir together garlic cloves, 1 tablespoon oyster sauce, soy sauce, salt, and 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch in a bowl. Return the pork to the wok with the bean sprouts and stir-fry for another minute or until everything is heated through. Continue to cook for another couple of minutes, then pour in the soy sauce and the mirin. Cook them for 3-4 minutes, then add the garlic, ginger and chilli. When the air is shimmering again, add the spring onions, red pepper and broccoli. Remove the pork from the wok with a slotted spoon and set it aside.Īdd the remaining oil. When the air above the oil is shimmering, add the pork and cook it for 2-3 minutes. Stir to coat all of the pieces, then cover and leave to marinate for at least half an hour – or overnight if you like. Mix the cornflour with the rice wine or mirin, whisk this into the egg white, then add the pork. Whisk the egg white in a bowl until smooth. Bunch of spring onions (sliced into rounds)įirst prepare the pork.Prep time: Approx 20 minutes (plus marinating time) If you’re looking for sassier stir-fry ideas, I’d recommend diet cola chicken and chicken satay from Pinch of Nom, which are lot more imaginative and gorgeous to eat. The peppers, broccoli and beansprouts provide enough bulk so that you don’t need rice, which always amazes me how something so bland can be so calorific. Repetition aside, this is pretty good and at only 168 calories per portion you could even double up if you’re hungry. Chop Suey is somewhat similar to chicken stir-fry from their third instalment ( Good Eating), except this time pork is used instead of chicken. I think by the time the Hairy Dieters got to their sixth book ( Make it Easy) they were running short of ideas. You could swap pork for turkey or chicken in this |
